Thursday, 7th March 2019, 2.00pm

Well-known to readers of Vidimus through his regular contributions, the stained glass author, photographer and lecturer, Roger Rosewell appreciates fully that stained glass was one of the most important arts of the Middle Ages, combing monumental painting with architecture, sculpture and other arts to create church interiors shimmering with sumptuous colours and miraculous stories.

In this richly-illustrated lecture for the Arts Society Grayshott he explains how and why stained glass was produced, the subjects that were show, and the workshops and patrons who were responsible for the glazing of both great cathedrals as well as parochial churches.  He will also trace the changes in style and techniques across the Middle Ages, as well as, ultimately, the wholesale destruction of these masterpieces during the religious reformations of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.

The lecture will take place in Grayshott Village Hall, Headley Road, Grayshott, Surrey GU26 6TZ.  Visitors are very welcome. The Visitors’ Fee to attend the lecture is £7.

For further information about the Society and the lecture, see the Society’s website.
