Tuesday, 10th January 2017, 6.00pm-7.00pm
Dr Claire FitzGerald will discuss female participation in the stained glass of the Arts and Crafts movement, focusing on Shrewsbury-native Margaret A. Rope in particular. Rope’s career encompassed an extraordinary combination of a love for the compositional strength and quality of materials found in medieval stained glass; a commitment to contemporary design and technologies; and a deep engagement with Roman Catholicism that ultimately saw the conducting of her artistic career from within a Carmelite convent. The lecture has a context in, and will provide further support to, the efforts to reinstate Rope’s reputation undertaken by the ongoing exhibition of her work at Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery.
The lecture will take place at University Guildhall, Shrewsbury University, Frankwell Quay, Shrewsbury SY3 8HQ. It is free and open to all, but booking is essential. To book, please email Shrewsbury Univeristy at communications@ucshrewsbury.ac.uk or telephone 01743 297185.
